plasma-windowgrid
A KWin effect for Plasma 6 (Wayland) that copies how WindowGrid works on Windows. It has not been compiled or tested yet, so expect build errors.
Usage
- Drag a window by its title bar with the left button held.
- Hold the right button (or Space) and move the cursor to pick the start cell. The grid shows up.
- Release the right button (or Space) and move the cursor. The window resizes live to the cells between the start and the cursor.
- Release the left button to finish.
Middle button during a drag switches to plain window moving. Escape cancels. The grid is transposed on portrait monitors.
Build
Needs the Plasma 6.8 KWin development files, since the effect API changes between releases.
sudo pacman -S --needed base-devel cmake extra-cmake-modules kwin libepoxy
makepkg -si
Or by hand:
cmake -S . -B build -DCMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX=/usr
cmake --build build
sudo cmake --install build
Then enable "WindowGrid" under System Settings > Window Management > Desktop Effects. Rebuild whenever KWin updates.
Config
There is no settings page. Edit ~/.config/kwinrc:
[Effect-windowgrid]
Columns=6
Rows=4
UseWorkArea=true
GridColor=255,255,255
SelectionColor=61,174,233
Opacity=0.35
Then run qdbus6 org.kde.KWin /KWin reconfigure.
License
